Copyright Joshua Stairhime 2017<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There is a concept in art known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Negative_space\">negative space<\/a>. \u00a0Negative space is space that is not filled by the subject of the art, but is essentially the nothing that something exists in. \u00a0Good graphic design demands that you pay attention to the negative space. \u00a0If your artwork is full of stuff, then the whole purpose of your creation can be lost in the extra fluff surrounding it. \u00a0 Your work goes from something like the Mona Lisa to a \u00a0&#8220;Where&#8217;s Waldo&#8221;. \u00a0Creating something without negative space makes it hard to really appreciate the beauty of what you are creating. \u00a0 It makes it hard for others to appreciate what you are creating as well.<br \/>\nOne day I was shown the quarry down the road from where I work, and ever since then I keep going back to it. \u00a0A quarry doesn&#8217;t sound that interesting, it is a place where people dig up rocks and sand. \u00a0Instead of filling up, a quarry is a place where people work to empty something. \u00a0As the\u00a0quarry is dug deeper, more and more of the quarry is removed, but at the same time, more and more of the quarry is revealed. \u00a0I&#8217;ve not yet been to the Grand Canyon, but I know that you don&#8217;t go there to see the things that fill it up, but rather how empty it is. \u00a0Yes, there are boundaries, but without those boundaries you couldn&#8217;t know how empty it is,\u00a0and you couldn&#8217;t be moved by how incredibly large it is. \u00a0When something is emptied out, a beauty that can not be taken away remains.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1142\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1142\" class=\"wp-image-1142 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joshuastairhime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/18175928_10155298018003385_1918719683_o-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"AnightwithStars\" width=\"625\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joshuastairhime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/18175928_10155298018003385_1918719683_o-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joshuastairhime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/18175928_10155298018003385_1918719683_o-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joshuastairhime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/18175928_10155298018003385_1918719683_o-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.joshuastairhime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/18175928_10155298018003385_1918719683_o-624x416.jpg 624w, http:\/\/www.joshuastairhime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/18175928_10155298018003385_1918719683_o.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A secret location in northwestern Ohio. Copyright Joshua Stairhime 2017<\/p><\/div>\n<p>God is a master of using negative space. \u00a0He created the sky, something inconceivably large, but something that seems so incredibly empty. \u00a0Or at least it seems empty as we run about trying to fill our lives with something. \u00a0It isn&#8217;t until you stop to appreciate how empty the night sky is, that you start to see the beauty it contains. \u00a0It isn&#8217;t until you turn off the lights, and slow down that you can see the stars poking through the inky blackness you&#8217;re surrounded by. \u00a0We\u00a0couldn&#8217;t see the beauty of the stars if they were jammed in tightly next to each other. \u00a0It is in the negative space of the sky, that those little pinpricks of light can shine out from and\u00a0make us feel so small.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m hoping to start accepting that emptiness isn&#8217;t the curse we&#8217;ve made it out to be. \u00a0It is, after all, a still small voice that speaks after the wind, after the earthquake, after the fire, that is the only voice that can truly fill us. \u00a0After Elijah had confronted the prophets of Bail, after he had won the Superbowl\u00a0of spiritual confrontations, he had to go somewhere to be emptied out. \u00a0He couldn&#8217;t handle being full. \u00a0He needed a rest, so he hid himself away from the world, and it is in those moments that God spoke to him. \u00a0He found peace in those moments. \u00a0He found himself in those moments.<\/p>\n<p>So maybe it is time for you to stop trying so hard to be full, and to instead allow yourself to be empty.<\/p>\n<p>Make room for something bigger.<\/p>\n<p>Make room for the breath of God to fill you.<\/p>\n<p>Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.<\/p>\n<p>To be hungry, you must be empty.<\/p>\n<p>Be empty.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- JoshuaStairhime.com --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0933436752356347\" data-ad-slot=\"8645915170\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"sharedaddy sd-sharing-enabled\"><div class=\"robots-nocontent sd-block sd-social sd-social-icon sd-sharing\"><h3 class=\"sd-title\">Did you enjoy what you just read?
