It’s raining again tonight…and I just tore a pretty significant hole in our roof.
Everything (including me) is wet and the rain does not appear to be stopping. This is one of the clear realities of Haiti though.
Haiti is tropical…it rains alot there. Which doesn’t sound like that big of a deal, until you stop to think about it. Our shelter is sitting on an asphalt driveway right now. In Haiti most floors are dirt. I wonder how many hours a family in Haiti must spend after every rain just trying to clean up there muddy clothes, feet, blankets, etc. How many hours that could be devoted to their children’s education or trying to improve their situation are lost to simply not having a cement floor?
In Ohio the only time a mud slide is a bad thing is when someone gets a little too inebriated and hurts themselves while sliding head first in mud. In Haiti (which to my surprise has mountains) a mudslide can kill. Their shelter would be totally swept away in any sort of mudslide or flash flooding. along with any possessions they have managed to re-accumulate in the 22 months since the earthquake.
I can’t imagine what it must really be like…knowing that in a heartbeat even the poor shelter you do have can be taken away.
It sounds like through the generosity of the congregation at Gateway Chapel we are at approximately $2500 raised. That means that we have only $8500 left to raise. You can help change the lives of 2 Haitian families by donating today at www.shelter127.org.
